Sacramento Council Member Faces Backlash Over Pledge of Allegiance Incident
Mai Vann, a council member from Sacramento and candidate for California’s 7th Congressional District, is encountering criticism after a video surfaced showing her declining to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance. This occurred during City Council meetings over Memorial Day weekend, where several videos captured her either looking away or remaining silent as others recited the pledge to the flag. Most recently, she was seen with her gaze downward during the ceremony.
Vann, who has been on the City Council since 2020, has previously explained her decision not to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. In a past speech, she mentioned that this choice allows her to ground herself, keeping in mind the ongoing injustices affecting communities both locally and globally.
“As much as I love this country, I use this moment to remind myself of the ongoing harms that many people face,” Vann stated. She went on to express her concern about becoming desensitized to the issues visible in the news. Instead, she emphasized the importance of staying connected with loved ones, resting, and remaining vigilant in the pursuit of equity and justice.
The backlash has intensified, with some local political figures criticizing her stance. For instance, political consultant Steve Maviglio, representing the Sacramento Democratic Party, described Vann’s actions as “totally disrespectful.” He added that saying the Pledge, even amidst disagreement, is a fundamental aspect of patriotism.
Vann is among a group of progressive candidates aiming to unseat longtime Democratic representative Doris Matsui, who has been in the California seat for over 20 years. Her platform includes progressive initiatives such as universal health care and higher taxes on the wealthy.
The primary election is set for June 2nd.
