California Estimates Gerrymandered Election Will Exceed $200 Million in Costs

California Assemblyman Carl DeMaio (R-San Diego) expressed his concerns on Thursday after the state indicated that Governor Gavin Newsom’s special election could exceed $200 million, mainly for a gerrymandered assembly map.

According to an earlier report from Breitbart News, DeMaio estimated the total cost to be around $250 million, suggesting it would essentially pave the way for a more favorable district map for Democrats.

The Secretary of State’s office estimated election costs to be over $200 million, referencing the previous 2021 Newsom recall election during which no other voting occurred. Most expenses stem from voting procedures and printing needs.

The discussion remains largely theoretical unless the California legislature initiates a special election by August 22nd. Newsom’s stance appears to hinge on whether Texas legislators can advance the Gerrymander Map.

Election officials have been prepping for this possibility, with the Secretary of State indicating a significant likelihood of a special election in November.

Newsom dismissed worries about the expenditure, asserting that the preservation of democracy, often jeopardized by gerrymandering, holds significant value.

Currently, California has a purportedly independent constituency committee, which many argue still benefits Democrats.
