California Gubernatorial Debate Scheduled

In a significant update for the California gubernatorial race, Democrat candidate Xavier Becerra has confirmed his participation in a televised debate against Republican candidate Steve Hilton. This will be the first direct debate between the two, who have previously only participated in multi-candidate primary discussions.

The debate is set for Wednesday, September 30th, at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time, and will take place at CNN’s studios in Burbank, California.

Moderated by CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, this hour-long event will be aired across various platforms, allowing viewers to see the two candidates who emerged from the June primary face off against each other as they aim to succeed outgoing Governor Gavin Newsom.

This agreement is viewed as a pivotal moment in the campaign, coming after extended discussions about the debate’s format, topics, and timing. For weeks, Hilton, a conservative commentator and former Fox News host, has publicly pushed Becerra to commit to a televised debate.

Becerra, who previously was the Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Biden and served as California’s Attorney General, finally agreed to the debate once it was confirmed that both candidates met the eligibility criteria, which included raising over $1 million and maintaining at least 15% support in polling.

Hilton’s campaign has centered on issues like economic affordability, reducing bureaucratic red tape, addressing homelessness, public safety, and reversing certain policies concerning illegal immigration.
