California GOP Governor Candidate Criticizes Newsom Amid Los Angeles Riots

Steve Hilton, a Republican candidate for Governor of California, expressed his concerns about the ongoing riots in Los Angeles during a recent interview. He was accompanied by former Democratic Senator Gloria Romero, speaking outside a graffiti-covered LAPD station.

Hilton remarked on the extent of graffiti he’s observed, stating, “Every time I go downtown, it feels like every surface is smeared with these crude drawings. It’s a clear indicator of the breakdown of law and order in our society.” This sentiment reflects his view of what he sees as a significant failure in governance under current leadership.

Marines Launch Operations in Response to Protests

His criticisms extend toward Governor Gavin Newsom, whom he believes is failing in his role. Hilton declared his candidacy for governor in April and hasn’t shied away from critiquing Newsom’s administration.

“In recent days, Newsom has demonstrated that he doesn’t deserve the governorship—let alone a presidential run,” Hilton told Fox News. “Instead of taking swift action to protect our communities and support civil order, he focuses on his own aspirations.”

Romero Shares Her Perspective

Romero, who served East Los Angeles in the Senate, echoed Hilton’s concerns. “For years, I tried to support reforms within the Democratic Party,” she noted. “But eventually, I realized the party has completely shifted—it’s become too progressive for me.”

She expressed worry about the implications of current immigration policies, suggesting that they allow dangerous individuals into California. “When we consider who is entering, we aren’t just talking about regular folks,” Romero added, highlighting her fears about crime.

Newsom Stands Firm Amid Criticism

Even as riots intensified, Newsom has not backed down from confronting the anti-Trump sentiments that have emerged alongside these protests. Speculation about his presidential ambitions has circulated, especially following his recent national speech, where he said, “California might lead the way, but we’re only the beginning.”

Amidst the chaos, the deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles has raised eyebrows, particularly following a night marked by immigration raids. Some observers wonder if this turbulent climate could create opportunities for Republican candidates, marking a potential shift reminiscent of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s governorship.
