California inmate tries to stab deputy, fellow inmate with makeshift knife

A California inmate serving a sentence for murder tried to stab a sheriff’s deputy and another inmate with a makeshift knife, sparking a chaotic prison brawl that was captured on video.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SBSD) said in a news release that the disturbance occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamango.

Sheriff’s deputies said 25-year-old Christopher Romy Jackson, who has been in custody since 2019, had a metal prison knife and attempted to stab another inmate.

When officers arrived to break up the altercation, Jackson attempted to stab an officer and wrestle him to the ground, prompting more officers to intervene to try and stop the assault. The violence spilled out into the hallway as officers attempted to subdue Jackson.

SBSD said the deputy who was attacked “suffered moderate injuries to the face and was treated and released from a local hospital.”

“Violent acts like these pose a serious threat to the safety and security of staff and inmates,” Sheriff Shannon Dicus said in a statement. “Our deputies work tirelessly to maintain order and provide a safe environment within the jail, and we will seek the fullest extent of the law to punish anyone who commits an attack within the jail.”

SBSD said Jackson has multiple prior arrests for violent crimes in San Bernardino County.
