California nude woman sculpture sparks reaction after public unveiling in San Francisco

The 45-foot statue of a naked woman is the latest and tallest statue of San Francisco's Embalcadero Plaza.

The artwork entitled “R-Evolution” was presented in Music, Light and Performance Art on Thursday. Designed to glow at night and appear to “breath” through an internal motor, this statue was meant to represent strength and compassion.

Instead, it sparked backlash, internet memes and questions about city priorities.

Originally created for those burning by sculptor Marco Cochrane in 2015, the stainless steel figure now stands outside the ferry building, casting a long (and anatomically detailed) shadow on a city with few people believed to have been impressed by the spectacle.

Some think that the statue is empowering, but many San Franciscans see it as another example of a city that misinterprets the room.

Social media lights up after a video by influencer Colin Lagg circulated and showed the cherry blossom picker getting awkwardly caught between the statue's legs while it was set up. The commentators immediately spent the day on site.

“There's nothing “downtown revival” like a 45-foot naked woman undergoing rear end surgery,” one user wrote. Another is, “This type of painting embodies the San Francisco spirit.

Statues were located just blocks from areas that served visible homelessness, outdoor drug use, and in-store in-room. The art world may call it “junction,” but many residents simply call it “toned deaf.”

Nancy Pelosi's Republican challenger Bruce Lou is dull in the last Congressional election.

“I don't know where to start with San Francisco's misguided priorities,” Lou said. “They seem to focus absolutely on everything except for the important things.”

Lou questioned Pelosi's connection to the city, saying, “I'm not even sure if Pelosi knows about the statue. She is originally from Baltimore and spends almost all her time in DC, so the city and her members are not on top of her mind.”

Former San Francisco GOP chair and current Cagop chairman John Dennis provided an even more keen evaluation.

“No one asked for this,” writes Sarah Hotchkiss, editor of Kqed Arts. Fox News

“The city, named after St. Francis, is now dominated by a feminist anti-male agenda. The results speak for itself,” he said. “The huge, naked woman blocking the iconic ferry building that I'm proud of is the perfect parochial phorus for San Francisco these days.”

However, the backlash was not limited to conservatives.

“No one asked for this,” wrote art editor Sarah Hotchkiss in an explanation by Kqed:

Her critique adds to the growing number of San Franciscan choruses across the political spectrum questioning how and why this has become a citizen's priorities.

More than 8,300 people have experienced homelessness in San Francisco, according to the latest time from the city.

The city plans to spend nearly $690 million on housing and homeless programs next year. The camp is still widespread in areas such as Tenderloin, Soma and Mission.

Violent crime fell 14% citywide last year, with car break-in reaching 22-year lows. This is an incredible development in a city where “smash and grab” once felt like a daily ritual.

However, gun violence has reached 5% and despite the stacked law enforcement, public safety remains a major concern.

The vacant storefronts and empty streets of downtown feel like the performance art itself, even on the most optimistic “revitalization” pitch.

Drug enforcement also increased in 2025, with drug arrests and citations rising almost 40% compared to early 2024.

Still, critics argue that enforcement without addiction treatment or shelter options often drives the problem without solving it.

“R-Evolution” is expected to remain intact for at least six months, and perhaps for up to a year.

D-Calif. Rep. Nancy Pelosi did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
