California’s Wildflower Season Faces Growing Concerns

California’s stunning wildflower season is becoming marred by reckless behavior, with vandals, selfie-seeking crowds, and unaware visitors causing damage.

As new flowers bloom, more people are flocking outdoors.

Recently released footage showcases a vibrant sea of purple lupines blanketing the Bald Hills near the Lions Ranch Trailhead in northern California, where blooms are expected to last through May.

No official trails are in place, and visitors are cautioned to avoid crushing delicate plants or using animal-created paths.

Officials are urging a strict “photo-only” policy, emphasizing that even the removal of a single flower can harm the ecosystem.

The wildflower spectacle typically unfolds later in the season, shifting locations as it goes. While the famed landscapes of Death Valley and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park have mostly faded, the higher elevations and coastal regions are currently among the most striking.

Thanks to favorable weather, colorful blooms continue to appear at places like Henderson Canyon Road and Red Rock Canyon State Park.

However, this heightened attention has led to significant issues.

A notable vandalism incident in Monterey County occurred in March at Calla Lily Valley in Garrapata State Park, where someone severely damaged the celebrated flower bed.

This Instagram sensation attracted even more visitors looking for the perfect photo opportunity.

Additionally, further inland at Dutch Hollow Farm in Modesto, an overwhelming number of visitors trampled thousands of tulips. John Boss, the farm’s owner, expressed frustration, noting that the extensive damage forced an early closure and criticizing guests for treating the farm as merely a picturesque setting.

While officials haven’t declared 2026 a “super bloom,” the state is still experiencing “moderate to strong” blooms.
