No monkey business allowed.
California police received a surprise response Monday night when they pulled over a Rolls-Royce on suspicion of drunk driving and discovered the dealer had a large amount of marijuana and a spider monkey in the front seat.
Ali Mused Adel Mohamed, 27, was driving a SR-99, a one-month-old primate wearing a pink dress, for speeding in a 2022 Rolls-Royce Ghost. I was arrested.
Mohamed was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and possession of marijuana for sale. This was announced by the California Highway Patrol.
“The driver had the baby monkey attached to his body or was clutching it. That's something you don't see every day,” said Modera CHP spokesman Sergio Moreno. told North Valley News.
The exotic pet was adopted by Mohammed due to California regulations that prohibit keeping primates as pets.
“Spider monkeys are illegal. You can't own one,” Madera County Animal Services Director Amy Toler told the show. “They're on the endangered species list. We definitely can't get them here in California.”
The baby male monkey was first taken to the Madera Animal Shelter.
While in the makeshift shelter, the unnamed monkey was captured on adorable video picking at mashed bananas and feeding himself with two separate spoons. I posted it on Facebook.
“Since we don't have what the monkeys need to feed, we chose common bananas as the next best option,” Toler said.
“This is not where they should be. You know, we shouldn't be taking care of these animals. They need to be in nature, in the wild with their own species.” she added.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife took custody of the monkey on Tuesday and plans to transport the primate to the Oakland Zoo, 150 NW of Madera.
Mohamed was booked into the Madera County Jail on several charges, including possession of exotic animals.
One photo showed the monkey sitting on Mohammed's lap in the back seat of a police car, and another photo showed an officer handcuffing the driver during a traffic stop.
Inside the white luxury car, officers removed several bags filled with marijuana buds, several phones and plastic bags containing money.
In November, Dallas police confiscated the internet-famous monkey Jorgy Boy. The pet, which was not allowed, was found critically ill and malnourished in a car accident, and the owner said he had passed out from alcohol.
