California siblings, ages 2 and 4, die after falling into fast-flowing river in mountains

A 2-year-old California boy and his 4-year-old sister died Tuesday afternoon when they were swept away by rapids while playing with their mother, authorities said.

The mother and her children were playing near Mill Creek while spending the afternoon at the Thurman Flats Picnic Area on Highway 38 in the San Bernardino Mountains, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

The mother was caring for her son around 3 p.m. when she was swept downstream, the sheriff’s office said.

According to police, when the mother returned after searching for the girl, she discovered that her son was also missing. It is believed that the boy also fell into the rapids and was swept downstream.
