California Senator Planning to Challenge Pelosi

A Democratic state senator from California is reportedly gearing up to run against Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who has yet to announce her plans regarding re-election or retirement, according to various sources.

Senator Scott Wiener is expected to make his intentions known “next week,” with several allies already informed of his plans. This news comes on the heels of Saikat Chakrabarti, a former chief of staff for Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, launching his own challenge against Pelosi.

Pelosi, now 85, has remained silent about her potential bid for another term in 2026. Wiener’s sudden entry into the race happens as Pelosi faces an unexpected primary challenger in Chakrabarti, who has previously made headlines as a wealthy ex-tech executive. He has allocated $700,000 of his personal funds towards his campaign, which has prompted Wiener to begin his own fundraising efforts early.

The San Francisco Standard initially revealed that Wiener was planning to run against Pelosi, with sources suggesting that many expected her to wait before making any decisions. Nonetheless, Wiener has hinted at a shift in his strategy despite previously stating he would hold off until Pelosi stepped down. Having held a prominent role in American politics, Pelosi has appeared less active recently, perhaps creating openings for challengers in the upcoming midterm elections.

Wiener’s revised approach might not go against his earlier commitments, as Pelosi still has not formally declared her intention regarding a 21st term in office. Notably, Wiener has previously criticized figures like Charlie Kirk and addressed issues related to the Trump administration, describing harsh realities for those detained under immigration laws.
