California suspect armed with ‘assault rifle,’ body armor killed after opening fire on deputies

Authorities in California shot and killed a suspect while responding to a domestic situation, but the suspect then ran out of the home and began firing at officers.

On Tuesday, the Riverside County Sheriff's Office announced that Deputies with the Hemet Sheriff's Office in Hemet were dispatched to the 26300 block of Jepson Court around 11:41 p.m. after receiving a report of an altercation between family members. During the collision, an adult female victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“Officers arrived at the residence and contacted the suspect at the front door. The suspect was uncooperative and closed the door. While deputies attempted to make contact with parties outside, the suspect fired at them with an assault rifle from inside the residence,” said Sergeant Wendy Brito-Gonzalez.

Police said the suspect, wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with an “assault rifle,” exited the home and fired a second shot at officers. At least one deputy opened fire, striking the suspect.
