Even famous quarterbacks like Cam Newton can’t seem to avoid brawls at youth football tournaments.
The Carolina Panthers star was involved in a scuffle in Atlanta, where a viral video shows Newton being shoved by three people near the top of a staircase.
Newton appears to have simply been fending off other men, but he apologized on his own podcast, “4th and 1.”
“I allowed the situation to escalate,” Newton said apologetically. “I panicked. You should have been in my pocket, bro.”
“To every high school baseball player, every influencer, every athlete, I want you to understand my situation: A moment, a decision, can change your life forever. And I let my emotions get the best of me,” Newton continued.
“I have to get better and it starts with me,” he added.
Jason Whitlock was impressed.
“I have to give him credit. He took on a lot of responsibility and said a lot of things that I really agree with,” Whitlock says.
“He grew up in the church. He understands that he has a responsibility to give back to serve young people, but he has eight children,” Whitlock continued, clearly still trying to figure things out. He pointed out that he was trying to understand.
Whitlock gives Newton some advice, especially when it comes to clothing, which is very flamboyant.
“Leadership requires some sacrifice, and I want to be a leader,” he explains.
“Leadership is very humbling, and service is very humble. So there’s no humility in the person who comes in wearing the flashiest suit, the flashiest style of clothing, and the flashiest look,” says Wit. Rock says.
