Tampa Updates on Cam Schrittler and Team Progress
While the regular season is still a month away, Cam Schrittler made significant strides on Wednesday in terms of preparing for a timely start.
The right-handed pitcher faced live hitters for the first time since the Yankees decided to take it easy on him two weeks ago due to some inflammation affecting his mid-back and left latissimus dorsi. He threw 25 pitches during the live batting practice.
Schrittler and the Yankees seemed unconcerned about his condition, but they were cautious about his development, ensuring that the 25-year-old didn’t run the risk of exacerbating the issue.
If all goes well following Wednesday’s outing, he could confront batters again this Sunday, possibly even participating in his first Grapefruit League game sometime next week.
Manager Aaron Boone expressed optimism, saying, “I expect him to be good,” in reference to Schrittler being ready for the season opener. He jokingly reflected on how, on a special day, he might just focus on Schrittler’s 70 pitches. “Even if you find yourself in a situation where you are carried on your back once or twice, sign me up,” he added.
The team has a few days off leading into their 10th game, which means they might not necessarily need a fifth starter right away.
However, if Schrittler feels fit, the Yankees plan to utilize him from the start.
In another development, Oswaldo Cabrera may be sidelined for a game as he continues to recover from the broken ankle and torn ligaments he sustained last May.
Boone noted, “He’s doing really well. I feel like he’s made considerable progress in the past few weeks, so he should be able to play by the end of next week. He’s starting to feel good again and regaining that explosive level.”
Meanwhile, Anthony Volpe has been enhancing his batting skills over the past week. Boone shared that it’s “going well” as Volpe works on the tee and engages in soft tosses.
