Trump Announces Ceasefire Between Thailand and Cambodia
President Donald Trump shared news that he recently spoke with leaders from Thailand and Cambodia, both of whom agreed to stop violence as of Friday evening. This decision aims to reinforce a peace agreement he previously facilitated.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reportedly reached an understanding to halt hostilities after renewed clashes began around December 7th, which had seen an escalation over the past weekend, unfortunately displacing hundreds of thousands.
The goal of Trump’s recent intervention is to revive a ceasefire established following earlier conflicts that began in July and lasted into October.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned having a productive discussion with both prime ministers regarding the troubling resurgence of their prolonged conflict. He expressed optimism about their commitment to cease all aggression and return to the terms of the original peace agreement, created with the assistance of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
“They have agreed to CEASE all shooting effective this evening, and go back to the original Peace Accord made with me, and them, with the help of the Great Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim,” Trump noted.
This prior agreement was made during the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia back in October, where Trump also secured trade deals with Thailand and Cambodia, ultimately prompting them to remove tariffs on U.S. goods.
However, hostilities resurfaced earlier this week, with the Thai military conducting airstrikes claimed to be a response to a Cambodian attack that led to casualties among Thai soldiers. Cambodia, on the other hand, accused Thailand of initiating the confrontation.
Trump commented on a roadside bomb incident that resulted in Thai casualties, describing it as an accident, but noted that Thailand responded “very strongly.”
“Both Countries are ready for PEACE [again] and continued Trade with the United States of America,” Trump stated. “It is my Honor to work with Anutin and Hun in resolving what could have evolved into a major War between two otherwise wonderful and prosperous Countries!”
He also expressed gratitude toward Anwar Ibrahim for his help in this crucial situation.
The ongoing border conflict has its roots in a map drawn during France’s colonial period in the early 20th century, which left the ownership of land surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple unclear.
The peace agreement established in October was viewed as fragile due to the historical grievances between the countries. Back in July, Trump had warned of potential tariffs if the fighting did not cease, a strategy he might employ again if tensions continue.
