Canada Unlikely to Hit 100% EV Goal Due to Lack of Demand

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has set a goal of phasing out gasoline-powered cars and switching to 100% electric vehicles by 2035, but auto industry executives say that’s unlikely to happen due to a lack of consumer demand.

Trudeau’s Liberal Party is green energy goal The goal is to have all new car sales be EVs by 2035, effectively eliminating gasoline-powered cars from the new car market, but as in the United States, these targets are unlikely to be met.

Executives at Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. said this week they don’t understand how the Canadian government expects the country to switch to 100% electric vehicles in just a decade, when consumers have little interest in anything other than gasoline-powered cars that can reliably travel long distances and in frigid temperatures.

“We need to reexamine our targets to make sure they are realistic,” said Frank Voss, president of Toyota Motor Canada. Said Bloomberg:

There is only so much the government can do to encourage consumers to buy the cars they want. Consumers choose what they need. [Emphasis added]

Similarly, Honda Canada CEO Jean-Marc Leclerc told Bloomberg that “a lot of things need to fall into place to give people the confidence to move to EVs.”

In Canada, as in the U.S., EVs remain a tiny fraction of new-vehicle sales, pointing to a slowdown in consumer demand that both governments had incorrectly predicted: Just 11% of new-vehicle sales were electric last year, for example.

At the same time, more than 1.3 million gasoline-powered vehicles were sold in Canada last year, making up the vast majority of cars sold.

In the United States, President Joe Biden is reportedly putting the brakes on an EV mandate that would require seven out of every 10 new cars sold in the U.S. market to be electric instead of gasoline-powered by 2032. The regulation would essentially force American consumers to buy EVs.

This report: According to a poll Biden’s EV mandate was highly unpopular.
