Canadian PM Mark Carney Commends Trump's Courage in Tackling the World's Significant Shifts

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney commended President Donald Trump for his “bold steps” at the G7 conference kickoff in Alberta, Canada, on Monday.

Carney reflected on previous G7 meetings that marked significant historical shifts over the last 50 years, mentioning events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, September 11, and other terrorist incidents in the U.S.

We gather at one of these pivotal moments in history. The world feels increasingly divided and perilous. Hostile nations and terrorist groups are enhancing their capabilities, posing threats to global security. Everything—global trade, energy systems, even intelligence—is being restructured.

He continued to highlight Trump’s forward-thinking approach in recognizing and addressing changes in the global landscape.

“Nostalgia isn’t a plan. We must adapt to current times and strive for a better future. Some leaders, like you, recognize these significant shifts and are boldly responding,” Carney said, referring directly to Trump.

After emphasizing the need for increased military and security resources among the nations, Carney noted that true security stems from “economic prosperity,” which in turn depends on “resilience.”

He called for collaboration as a cornerstone of resilience, aiming for “a new era of prosperity, energy security, vital minerals, artificial intelligence, quantum advancements, human trafficking, and cross-border oppression.”

He added that consensus among leaders “can greatly impact citizens and the world.”

Trump and Carney addressed reporters prior to their private meeting, which preceded the official welcome ceremony and initial session involving all seven leaders.

Trump stated that the summit’s “main focus” would be on trade, emphasizing that he had brought his trade team along.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Isbaiba, and German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz joined Carney and Trump for their opening session post-welcome ceremony.

A private meeting between Trump and Merz was also on the day’s agenda.
