Canadians Continue to Stay Away from U.S. Due to President Trump's Tariffs

Many Canadians Continue to Shun U.S. Travel

In the wake of tariffs imposed by President Trump, many Canadians are still hesitant to travel to the United States. CTV News reported that in October, the number of Canadians returning by car dropped to 1.4 million—a decrease of 30.5% compared to 2024, according to preliminary Statistics Canada data.

This marks the tenth consecutive month of decline in air travel as well, with a 24% drop as more Canadians opt for destinations outside the U.S.

Breitbart News noted that this trend has adversely impacted both air and land travel, particularly since President Trump hinted at imposing further tariffs on U.S. trading partners back in January.

In a recent announcement, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt detailed a new 25% tariff on products from Canada and Mexico, along with a 10% tariff on Chinese imports. She stated this strategy aims to hold these countries accountable for drug trafficking and foster fairer conditions for U.S. workers.

Just a few months afterward, President Trump mentioned plans for a 35% tariff on Canadian goods in response to previous tariffs that Canada had imposed on American products, claiming Canada wasn’t doing enough to stop fentanyl from crossing the border.

In October, he added a further 10% tariff on Canadian imports, following the airing of a controversial ad featuring former President Ronald Reagan.

During the World Series, an anti-tariff advertisement suggested Canada was “caught red-handed” manipulating a clip of Reagan. This ad was produced by the Ontario government and prompted swift criticism from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute.

In light of this controversy, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued an apology to President Trump regarding the ad.
