In a significant primary election for a Florida House seat, businessman Jim Schwartzel emerged victorious over Katarina Rauch, a former Commerce Department official who had the endorsement of President Donald Trump. The primary featured ten Republican candidates in total.
Schwartzel, who is more of a political newcomer, secured 29.2% of the votes, edging out Rauch, who garnered 21.8%. It’s worth noting that Rauch had previously campaigned for a position in the Illinois General Assembly. He also received endorsements from notable figures like Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan and former Southwest Florida Reps. Connie Mack III and IV. Trump, on the other hand, supported Rauch during her brief stint in his administration back in 2018.
This race, aimed at representing Florida’s 19th Congressional District, included other notable contenders such as former North Carolina Congressman Madison Cawthorn and former New York Congressman Chris Collins. Cawthorn, who was the youngest member of Congress during his single term from 2021 to 2023, found himself trailing behind Schwartzel and Rauch.
In a rather competitive primary, Schwartzel’s win seems promising, especially given the district’s Republican tendencies, which positions him as a strong candidate to take over from retiring Republican Rep. Byron Donald, who won his primary for Florida governor.
Interestingly, Cawthorn faced scrutiny during his time in office. He made headlines for bringing a loaded firearm into an airport and dealt with legal issues related to a revoked driver’s license. Collins too had his share of controversy, resigning from Congress after an FBI investigation into insider trading, fraud, and lying to authorities, only to receive clemency from Trump in December 2020.
Recent polls indicate that both Rauch and Schwartzel are prime contenders, with some surveys placing them neck-and-neck at 19% support, while Collins and Cawthorn lag behind in single digits.
Rauch has attracted endorsements from various organizations and political figures, including Make America Health Again (MAHA) Action and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, highlighting a network of support that bolsters her campaign.
As Schwartzel sets his sights on the congressional seat left by Donald, the dynamics of support in the district could have significant implications for the upcoming presidential race. Rauch voiced her belief that voters are growing weary of a political elite that seems disconnected from their concerns, a sentiment that may resonate in a time of increasing political scrutiny.
