‘Candyman’ Star Tony Todd Dead at 69

(AP) Tony Todd, the actor known for playing the haunting killer in the horror movie “Candyman” and for his roles in numerous other films and television shows, has died, his longtime manager confirmed. He was 69 years old.

Todd died Wednesday at his home in the Los Angeles area, his manager Jeffrey Goldberg announced in a statement to The Associated Press.

“I was privileged to have had Tony as a friend and customer for over 30 years, and I will miss this wonderful man every day,” said Mr. Goldberg.

Goldberg's management company announced Goldberg's death, saying, “Known worldwide for his extraordinary physical and artistic presence, Tony was known for his work in film, theater, and those who knew him.'' He left an indelible legacy in the hearts of those who had the honor of doing so.”

“We say goodbye to Tony Todd, a giant of the film world and a beloved soul whose impact on our lives and the world of film will never be forgotten.”

Todd's film resume included appearances in award-winning films such as Oliver Stone's 1986 classic “Platoon.”

Todd was also known for his role in the 2000 horror film Final Destination and its 2003 sequel. Film company New Line Cinema mourned Todd's death on social media over the weekend.

“The industry has lost a legend,” the company said on Instagram. “We have lost a dear friend. Rest in peace, Tony.”

In “Candyman” released in 1992, Remake in 2021Todd played a terrifying murderer with a hook attached to one arm. The premise is built around the urban legend that Candyman roams the Cabrini Green housing projects in Chicago and is summoned when you say your name five times in front of a mirror. The 2021 film addresses social issues such as racism and police brutality.

Todd's television career included “Night Court,” “Matlock” and “Law & Order.”

“Off-screen, Tony was cherished as a mentor, friend, and pioneer of kindness and wisdom,” Goldberg's company said in a statement. “He dedicated his time and resources to aspiring actors and consistently advocated for greater representation and authenticity within the industry.”

“Those who knew him will remember his warm laugh, generous spirit and dedication to his craft,” the company said. “Whether on stage, on screen or in private conversations, Tony brought an unwavering integrity that resonated deeply with his friends, family and fans.”
