Canton, Massachusetts police officer testifies about red Solo cup in Karen Read trial

In a recent trial concerning the death of John O’Keefe on January 29, 2022, a former Canton Police officer discussed unconventional methods employed during evidence collection. This involved using leaf blowers and red solo cups, which raised eyebrows about the integrity of the evidence gathered. The testimony unfolded in Dedham, Massachusetts, where the accused, Karen Reed, faces serious charges.

Last week, key witness Jennifer McCabe shared her recollections of an afterparty prior to O’Keefe’s tragic demise. Special Counsel Hank Brennan sought to uncover details regarding blood alcohol levels and the actions of paramedics present at the scene. Onlookers noted that unconventional tools were used to collect vital evidence.

The former Lt. Col. Paul Gallagher, in charge of the scene, believed shoveling snow could disrupt evidence, thus opting for a leaf blower instead. He noted that the red solo cups served to effectively contain liquids related to the investigation. It’s curious, though, that he chose these methods over standard practices typically employed by police.

Gallagher’s testimony suggested he made split-second decisions based on the chaotic circumstances. He mentioned ice and snow complicating the situation and described the initial call as potentially indicating an ‘unattended death,’ usually seen in natural circumstances.

During cross-examination, defense attorney Alan Jackson questioned Gallagher’s unconventional choices, pointing out inconsistencies and potential issues with evidence collection procedures. The arguments circled around the integrity of blood samples and whether contamination had occurred.

A notable moment arose when Gallagher admitted the blood sample might have been compromised, which could potentially benefit Reed’s defense. He claimed his choice of using solo cups was practical given the weather conditions, although such a rationale has drawn skepticism.

As the trial progressed, witness testimonies shaped a narrative around the events leading to O’Keefe’s death, including conflicting accounts of his whereabouts. Witnesses testified about their proximity to the incident, noting they hadn’t seen him during critical moments. Questions arose about the circumstances, suggesting the possibility that he was already inside his home prior to the encounter.

Reed, who has denied any wrongdoing, could face significant prison time if found guilty of the charges against her. The intricacies of the trial reflect not only the factual disputes but also the varying perspectives of those involved, creating a complex and nuanced situation that may leave lingering questions.
