Carville Critiques Democrats Over Platner Vetting

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville recently expressed concerns about the vetting process surrounding Senate candidate Graham Platner. During a podcast on Wednesday, Carville pointed out that Democratic leaders and some liberal commentators who once defended Platner amidst various controversies are now accusing him of new sexual assault allegations.

Jenny Racicot, a resident of Maine, has come forward claiming that Platner raped her nearly five years ago, stating in interviews with Politico and CNN that he intruded into her home while intoxicated and assaulted her. Platner has refuted these allegations.

In the latest episode of “Politics War Room,” Carville described the election as indicative of younger Democrats straying from established political protocols, which he believes are vital for navigating such situations.

Carville remarked on the shift in political attitudes, noting that a younger cohort of consultants seemed to operate without adhering to traditional political norms, and their strategy had initially seen success. He raised concerns about the apparent lack of candidate vetting, rhetorically questioning members of the Maine Democratic Party regarding their diligence.

He pointed out the importance of thorough opposition research, contrasting current practices with past standards in politics where candidates were carefully assessed. Carville highlighted that the recent allegations against Platner mark a significant shift in tone compared to his previous defenses of the candidate, which he had made just a month prior.

While Carville had emphasized the unique experiences and backgrounds of candidates like Platner—who he described as “a bit eccentric”—his later remarks reflected a clear change in perspective as allegations mounted against Platner from multiple sources.

In defending Platner earlier, Carville had drawn parallels to historical figures, suggesting that cooperation could transcend personal flaws. However, his past defenses have since come under scrutiny as the situation evolves. “I think it’s important to recognize how things have changed,” Carville noted, acknowledging the inadequacies in the vetting processes that have come to light amid the current scandal.

As the political landscape continues to shift, responses from Platner’s campaign regarding these serious allegations have yet to be made public. The ongoing controversy is likely to have lasting implications for Platner’s Senate aspirations.
