Catholic Group Urges Apple CEO Tim Cook to Apologize
A Catholic advocacy group is pressing Apple CEO Tim Cook to apologize and remove a controversial scene from an Apple TV+ show. In a letter addressed to Cook, the group expresses concern over what they deem an “anti-Catholic” portrayal in a segment of the series.
The letter, signed by Josh Mercer, vice president of a major Catholic organization, highlights an episode in which characters desecrate the Eucharist, a central element of Catholic faith. Mercer describes a scene where a male character steals the Eucharist and makes light remarks that trivialize its significance, leading to unsettling actions within a church setting.
Mercer called for a meeting with Cook to discuss promoting “true diversity and tolerance,” criticizing the show’s depiction as “sacrilegious.” He questioned if Apple would allow similar representations concerning other faiths, suggesting a selective tolerance in their content choices.
He reinforced the Catholic belief that the Eucharist embodies the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ, referencing its importance as central to the faith over two millennia. Mercer also noted Apple’s public claims about fostering a culture of dignity and respect, urging Cook to adhere to these values.
The group has launched a petition that, as of now, has garnered nearly 170,000 signatures urging Apple’s leadership to recognize the potential harm caused by such portrayals. In a statement to Fox News Digital, Mercer emphasized that portraying the Catholic Church in a dismissive light is a direct assault on the faith’s core values.
Despite reaching out for comments, neither Cook nor Apple has responded directly to this growing outcry. Mercer concluded by asserting that it’s crucial for the company to address this issue, calling for the removal of the episode and issuing an apology to the Catholic community.
