Cause of death disclosed for man who severed his penis in DTLA

Tragic Incident in Downtown Los Angeles

A man died in a brutal act of self-harm in downtown Los Angeles, reportedly under the influence of methamphetamine. Ryan Dexter Sutherland, 31, engaged in this harrowing behavior on March 7, as detailed in a coroner’s report.

Sutherland inflicted over 20 stab wounds on various parts of his body, including his neck, abdomen, and arms, according to the findings. The scene was particularly shocking; his blood-soaked clothing was found scattered on the sidewalk.

Tests revealed that Sutherland had dangerously high levels of meth and MDMA in his system, with blood levels indicating a lethal dose of stimulants. While the exact cause of death wasn’t pinpointed, it was clear that the drugs played a significant role.

The report classified his injuries as resulting from a non-serrated pocket knife, about two inches long. Specifically, the wound to his genitals was severe, measuring around a foot in circumference, which caused extensive damage.

Injuries to crucial arteries and veins in his right arm, along with a neck wound that impacted his jugular vein and trachea, were believed to have contributed to his death.

A security guard at a nearby 7/11 witnessed Sutherland collapsing and promptly called for help. Police arrived at the location, near Figueroa Avenue and Pico Boulevard, to find his clothing covered in blood. Fingerprinting enabled authorities to identify him.

Sutherland was described as a black man, 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 264 pounds, with brown eyes and facial hair. His aunt mentioned that he had never threatened to take his life and had struggled with substance abuse in the past, having attended rehabilitation. His parents were notified of his passing.

Details about Sutherland’s background remain sparse, though it is noted that he dealt with ADHD. Research shows that individuals who use stimulants are at a notably higher risk for suicide compared to the general population.
