CBS News anchor Margaret Brennan struggled Sunday to come to terms with the fact that Americans might support President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
Under the leadership of President Joe Biden, Approximately 8 million immigrants The number of people entering the U.S. does not include “fugitives” — immigrants who immigration authorities are unable to detain. At least 1.7 million “fugitives” Biden administration policies may have prompted the migration of roughly 10 million people.
“We live in different times where many would say the whole system is not working.”
Unsurprisingly, the border crisis has become one of the main issues in the election, with polls showing that an overwhelming majority of voters trust Donald Trump to solve the problem.
CBS News polling director Anthony Salvant noted Sunday that these surveys also show that voters support tougher immigration policies. In fact, a new CBS poll found that 62% of registered voters support President Trump’s proposed “mass deportation” policies.
When confronted with this fact, Brennan rushed to Biden’s defence.
She said:
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Biden deported or deported more people last year than he has since 2010. And depending on the details of what was said on the campaign trail, some of what Trump said could be illegal. In some ways, arresting children en masse seems unrealistic.
And courts have questioned whether local governments have the capacity to do it, and we know that federal authorities don’t have the resources to do it.So what exactly do people think they’re supporting?
Despite the potential legal issues raised by Brennan, Salvant said CBS tested the idea of local law enforcement enforcing immigration policy, and respondents liked it.
“We even tested the idea of whether local police should be involved in this, and many said ‘yes,'” he said.
Salvant explained that the importance of the poll is that it shows the “direction” of voters.
“But for viewers watching this campaign, what we’re seeing here has to do with what some would say is the politicization of the courts, the idea of mass deportations, etc. We live in a different time where many would say the whole system is not working,” he told Brennan.
“If you connect the dots between all of these things, they’re all part of the backlash against it, which explains some of the general sentiment against some of these policies,” Salvant explained.
