Joe Mazzulla has led the Celtics to notable success over the past three years, earning them a franchise ring for the 2023-24 season.
This past Friday, he received a well-deserved acknowledgment for his efforts.
Mazzulla has officially extended his contract with the Celtics. He’ll be at the helm for at least two more years, though specifics weren’t disclosed in Boston’s announcement.
“This is a remarkable blessing,” Mazzulla stated in the release. “I wouldn’t be here without my faith, family, and the support of our ownership group—especially from Brad (Stevens) and our coaching staff.”
Stevens, who previously coached the team from 2013-21 and is now the president of basketball operations, expressed his enthusiasm for Mazzulla’s ongoing role with the franchise.
“He really gets what the job is about and has a true passion for the Celtics. The fans here are incredibly dedicated,” Stevens remarked in a team release.
“He’s put in tremendous effort and achieved impressive results in his first three years as head coach, averaging 60 wins per season and capturing the 2024 NBA Championship.”
Before stepping into the head coach role, Mazzulla served as an assistant for the Celtics for three years.
He also had coaching experience with the G-League team, the Maine Red Claws.
Prior to entering the NBA, Mazzulla was an assistant coach at Glenville and Fairmont’s Division II programs and played college basketball at West Virginia.
Last season was tough for Mazzulla and the Celtics during the playoffs; they lost star player Jason Tatum due to an Achilles injury, and the Knicks eliminated them in the second round.
Mazzulla certainly has a challenging season ahead.
While Tatum might return during the season as he recovers, some other players from last year’s roster are already looking for new opportunities due to cap issues.
The upcoming 2025-26 season could prove to be difficult for the Celtics, but at least Mazzulla has the security of a contract extension.
