Pickpockets in Mallorca are said to be targeting elderly and distracted tourists around Palma.

As tourists flock to one of Spain’s favored summer spots, the issue of pickpocketing has become a notable concern.

Several videos circulating online appear to depict tourists falling victim to pickpockets on Mallorca, Spain’s largest Balearic island.

According to local reports, these incidents occurred near Palma, the capital city of Mallorca.

One recent clip shows a group of young pickpockets targeting an elderly couple. In the video, an older man stands obliviously in one direction while a few young men come up beside him and seem to remove items from his pockets, all without him noticing.

In another video, two young men attempt to snatch a wallet from an elderly woman’s bag as she walks past Palma Cathedral.

Mallorca, alongside Ibiza and Menorca, is one of Spain’s most popular Mediterranean destinations, but it faces challenges from overwhelming tourist numbers.

Reports suggest the island could see around 13.5 million visitors by 2025, a hefty figure for an island roughly the size of Rhode Island.

Travel expert Angel Castellanos, based in California and host of “The Tour Guy” on YouTube, mentions that older travelers are not specifically targeted due to their age.

“Criminals tend to look for those who seem distracted, burdened with shopping bags, or unfamiliar with their surroundings,” he noted in a conversation with Fox News Digital.

He also pointed out that intoxicated travelers, especially in crowded nighttime settings where situational awareness drops, are at risk.

Castellanos suggests that the ongoing issue with pickpockets might explain why international tourism has surged beyond pre-pandemic levels in numerous regions of Europe.

Having traveled to over 100 countries without suffering pickpocket incidents himself, Castellanos stresses the importance of staying aware.

“It’s really about navigating crowded tourist spots just like any other major city. I enjoy the destination, but I always keep an eye on my belongings,” he remarked.

He highlights that utilizing anti-theft bags and zippered pockets can be effective in preventing thefts and advises against leaving mobile devices unattended on café tables.

A little vigilance, he believes, can make a significant difference.

Experts encourage travelers not to be dissuaded by negative headlines regarding Mallorca. “This remains one of Europe’s top summer destinations,” they remind us.
