Chaos ensues at Maryland county board meeting following approval of ICE detention center

Maryland Board Meeting Disrupted by Whistleblower and Protests

A recent board meeting in suburban Maryland was abruptly canceled after a whistleblower emerged, sparking protests shortly after officials approved a resolution for collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This included plans to acquire a warehouse in Williamsport, which upset many members of the Democratic party.

Just a few miles south, DHS finalized the purchase of a property for $102 million in Williamsport, located just across the Potomac River from Falling Waters, West Virginia, and roughly 120 miles from Washington, D.C.

This facility quickly became a hotspot for protests. Notably, a video featuring David Trone, a billionaire and former Congressional candidate, surfaced. In the video, Trone stood on a snowbank near the center and asserted that ICE was “executing people” and claimed they had no place in Maryland.

During the heated meeting, Washington County Commission Chairman John Barr struck the gavel as the audience voiced their anger regarding the resolution. He emphasized, “The safety and security of our community is of paramount importance,” stating that “DHS” and “ICE play a critical role in securing our nation’s borders and enforcing immigration laws.” His voice vote seemed to reflect unanimous support among board members, yet the audience erupted in disapproval, making their objections clear.

Outside the meeting venue on Washington Street, anti-ICE protesters blew whistles and waved signs proclaiming “No to concentration camps” and “No to ICE prisons.” One of the protesters, Richard Hartman, expressed that the “ICE facilities are inhumane” and reiterated that they don’t want such institutions in their community.

On the opposing side, a couple of counter-protesters held signs reading “Trump is your president” and “We Love ICE.” Federal lawmakers from Maryland asked local authorities not to adopt the resolution. Trone’s electoral opponent, Rep. April McClain Delaney, labeled the plan “extensive and dangerous,” alleging it was conceived “in the dark.” She criticized it as yet another instance of the Trump administration lacking transparency and respect for human life.

Washington County is situated in a politically diverse area, with staunchly Democratic suburbs to the east and a Republican stronghold to the west. Authorities from nearby Howard County recently locked down another ICE facility in Elkridge, as reported by the Baltimore Police Department. Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, Democrats are opposing similar agreements for facilities, including one near Chartlesville, a rural area that previously hosted the defunct Roadside America attraction.

In speaking about the Williamsport center, Trone mentioned that ICE “detained children as young as 5 years old, American citizens, and veterans.” He criticized the expansion of detention space, claiming it was made necessary by a “reprehensible bill” passed by Congress that erodes due process rights and broadens government powers related to enforcement.

Republicans vying for the seat, like Robin Ficker and Chris Barnett, have shown support for immigration enforcement. State Rep. Neil Parrott of Hagerstown mentioned in past statements that he is forming a review committee, although he has not formally declared his intentions yet.
