Charlamagne claims Democrats 'appear hypocritical' following Iran strikes

Radio host Charlamagne criticized Democrats on Monday for their silence regarding President Donald Trump’s decision to launch a military strike on Iran without seeking Congressional approval. He pointed out that they didn’t speak up when similar actions were taken in the past.

This surprise operation, conducted on Saturday, involved B-2 stealth bombers targeting nuclear sites in Fold, Natanz, and Isfahan.

Air Force Secretary General Duncanne reported on Sunday that all three locations endured significant damage.

During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona asserted that a head of state ought to consult Congress before taking such actions. He emphasized that the constitutional route would have been to discuss the goals and plans for the strike in advance to allow for dialogue.

Charlamagne agreed with the senator but urged Democrats like Kelly to reflect on their own positions. He mentioned, “This is one instance where politicians seem hypocritical. While Kelly is correct, the president should have sought Congress’ approval, many previous leaders have acted without it.” He cited that Barack Obama launched strikes in Libya and Joe Biden did so in Iraq and Syria, highlighting that it’s become quite common for presidents to bypass Congressional authorization.

Co-host Morgyn V. Wood mentioned that this issue could be used against each other in debates.

Charlamagne raised the question of why previous actions didn’t lead to similar backlash. Wood explained that although there were calls for military actions without Congressional consent before, Charlamagne remained unconvinced.

He added, “I can’t even recall hearing about it during Biden’s term.” DJ Envy chimed in, suggesting it might be because of the way Trump operates, indicating that similar actions by Obama or Biden didn’t receive as much attention either.

Charlamagne recalled that when Obama acted, Congress demanded approval, which he felt hadn’t been the case with Biden’s actions.

After a discussion about Biden’s controversial withdrawal from Afghanistan, Sharra Magnu pointed to broader frustrations about accountability in military decisions. A piece by NBC News highlighted that the practice of presidents ordering military action without Congressional approval has become increasingly routine.
