Leclerc’s Triumph at Monaco
Charles Leclerc celebrated a memorable win at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, marking what many consider his most significant victory in Formula 1. After years of near misses on these familiar streets, he finally clinched the victory he had long sought.
As the Monaco Grand Prix approaches again this weekend, Leclerc is revving up for another competition.
Leclerc and Ferrari have confirmed a new multi-year contract, ensuring that the 28-year-old will remain with the team for the upcoming seasons in the F1 World Championship.
In his statement, Leclerc expressed that Ferrari is “more than just a team.” He shared, “I couldn’t be happier to continue this journey with Scuderia Ferrari. This has always been a dream for me, and over the years, it’s turned into my second family. Together, we’ve faced incredible highs and some challenging moments, but my faith in this team is stronger than ever. I’m truly grateful we’ll continue working towards our goal of bringing the World Championship back to Maranello.”
He went on to say, “Being a Ferrari driver is a dream, yet it comes with a responsibility I won’t take lightly. I will strive to do my best for everyone at Maranello, especially for the Tifosi, whose passion fuels this Scuderia, aiming to elevate our team back to the top.”
This announcement comes at a compelling moment in sports. Mercedes has been dominating the 2026 season since the onset of the new regulations. They’ve won every grand prix thus far, with Kimi Antonelli or George Russell at the helm. Russell currently holds a solid 43-point lead in the drivers’ championship over his teammate, boasting 131 points to 88.
Leclerc sits in third place with 75 points, just three points behind teammate Lewis Hamilton.
Mercedes is also leading the constructors’ championship, ahead of Ferrari by 72 points with a total of 219 points.
Despite this, Ferrari is seen as the favorite for Leclerc’s home race due to the high downforce nature of the circuit, which plays to their strengths while limiting Mercedes’ advantage on long straights.
Interestingly, Antonelli, who won the Canadian Grand Prix, is noted as a favorite for the Monaco race.
Looking ahead, Ferrari seems to be the ideal fit for Leclerc, given his strong ties with the team. His relationship with team principal Frédéric Vasseur goes back to his Alfa Romeo days. Reports suggest that Leclerc has developed close connections with several Ferrari leaders, including CEO Benedetto Vigna and president John Elkann.
Leclerc has been part of the Ferrari family since 2016 when he joined their junior academy.
Vasseur described Leclerc’s contract renewal as “very natural,” acknowledging his long-standing relationship with the team. “Charles has been with Ferrari for many years, and this renewal aligns perfectly with us,” Vasseur stated. “We’ve witnessed his growth into one of Formula 1’s top drivers, and he’s fully integrated into what Ferrari represents. We admire his talent and determination, both on and off the track.”
He concluded, “We understand how much this project means to him and are excited to continue pursuing our shared objectives.”
Leclerc’s current contract with Ferrari lasts until 2027, with expectations that it may extend beyond 2028.
