Trump considers Rep Russell Fry for special election seat in South Carolina

Graham's passing sparks competition for Senate position as Trump suggests a preferred candidate

Republicans Expedite Search for Lindsey Graham’s Successor

Mark Bednar, a former communications director for Kevin McCarthy, has discussed the pressing political race to fill South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham’s seat. He highlighted the importance of quick coordination between President Donald Trump and Governor McMaster to appoint an interim replacement and support strong Republican contenders for the upcoming special election. Candidates such as Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evett and Representative Russell Fry are in the mix but seem cautious about potential internal conflicts.

As the special election date of August 11 approaches, President Trump has hinted at a possible long-term replacement for Graham. Interest from some Congressional members in the special election is already evident, with some openly campaigning for Trump’s backing.

Trump appeared to single out Congressman Russell Fry as a leading candidate, saying, “I think Russell Fry, a young congressman, is an outstanding person… I can see that happening.” He has previously endorsed Fry in the 2022 primary, a move that helped Fry defeat then-Representative Tom Rice, one of the Republicans who voted to impeach Trump following the January 6th Capitol riot.

Trump noted that Fry has excelled compared to his predecessor. “I think a name like Russell Fry is a player to keep an eye on,” he remarked, pointing out Fry’s popularity in South Carolina.

In addition to Fry, President Trump has endorsed Graham’s sister, Darling Graham, who was appointed to fill the seat temporarily. South Carolina’s Governor McMaster made the appointment, and she is set to be sworn in soon. Trump mentioned that her role would likely be interim.

Other potential candidates like Representatives Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman are also watching the unfolding competition closely. Interestingly, neither Mace nor Norman won the Republican nomination for governor, which ultimately went to Attorney General Alan Wilson, defeating Trump-supported Lieutenant Governor Pam Evette.
