Chicago Democrat urges officials to remove sanctuary city status

Chicago Democrats are calling for the city's sanctuary status to be lifted as the immigration crisis continues to strain local resources.

Government employee Kata Truss told “Fox News@Night” that Democratic voters like her are increasingly dissatisfied with the party's handling of the issue.

“We don't have the money to take care of the immigrants, we don't have the money to take care of the people who live there, so we're in a mess,” Truss said Wednesday.

Truss claimed Windy City residents are outraged that low-income neighborhoods and schools are being “sold out” while funds are instead used to care for immigrants.

“This is the feeling of the city of Chicago: We want our sanctuary city status lifted,” she said. “We also hope that a better plan will be developed.”

Truss said she tried to contact Democratic lawmakers in the city to sit down with her and other members of the community to discuss the situation, but “no one would talk to me.”

“If you guys don't want to sit down with us, if you're not willing to talk to us, why should we continue to support you?” she said. I did. “Many of us [Democrats] Jumping over the ship. ”

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson on Wednesday defended his response to the crisis.

“I know people may question my style, but please don't question my leadership.” the Democratic Party said.

Truss said she doesn't understand the mayor's feelings.

“I think he's remorseful, just like people are remorseful. We're not happy with what's going on here.”

Truss added that he was also disappointed in President Biden for not using his executive powers to stem the flow of illegal immigration from the southern border.

The city says nearly 34,000 immigrants have arrived in Chicago since it began collecting data, and more than $156 million has been spent on housing and care since October 2022.

While running for office last year, Johnson fully supported immigrants coming to the city, but recently called for more federal aid, saying the current influx is “unsustainable.”
