The 33-year-old Chicago man was scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday, but it was unclear whether he had an attorney who could argue on his behalf.

A Chicago man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting and killing a police officer responding to a robbery call.

Police allege Lucas shot and killed a Chicago police officer early Monday morning after someone tried to drive his SUV through the window of a Prada store in the city's Gold Coast neighborhood.

When officers arrived, multiple suspects fled the store, but officers caught up with Lucas at a nearby intersection, where he exchanged gunfire with police. Police said Lucas fired several shots at the officer, hitting the 55-year-old officer in the leg, causing non-life-threatening injuries.

Lucas was injured by police gunfire and was initially reported to be in serious to critical condition. He remained hospitalized in police custody on Wednesday, police said.

The federal indictment against Lucas was returned in April 2019, charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm after being arrested by Chicago police three months earlier. The case has been pending since October 2022, when Lucas has been a fugitive, according to federal court records, the Chicago Tribune reported.
