Chicago Mayor’s Stance Against ICE Collaboration
On Tuesday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson stated firmly that the city would “not work with ICE.” He expressed concern for workers and low-income individuals, emphasizing the need for government support amidst challenges associated with the Trump administration.
During a press conference, he responded to queries regarding whether the city would establish police boundaries around schools to shield students from federal agents operating without a warrant. “We welcome the city ordinance,” Johnson said, asserting that local police would refrain from cooperating with ICE, regardless of the agency’s constitutional authority, which he believes is being undermined by the former administration.
Johnson has been vocal in his criticism of ICE. Just last month, he called on House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to address the topic of ICE’s immigration enforcement, which he labeled as “terrorism.”
He also encouraged Chicagoans to stand against ICE’s actions. Since August 31, 2022, the city has welcomed over 51,000 undocumented immigrants.
Recent discussions, including comments from Trump’s “Border Czar” Tom Homan on “The Will Cain Show,” highlighted tensions surrounding ICE. Homan remarked on a significant increase in attacks against ICE agents and criticized an app named Iceblock, which allegedly helps track ICE operations. He expressed concern that such tools might lead to dangerous confrontations.
The White House responded to these developments, with spokeswoman Abigail Jackson describing Democratic efforts to support undocumented individuals as misguided. She stated that President Trump remains committed to safeguarding American citizens and plans to undertake a large-scale deportation initiative targeting sanctuary cities.
