Chiefs’ Chris Jones doesn’t want to hear ‘the R word’ after Travis Kelce was asked about retirement

Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs teammate, defensive tackle Chris Jones, doesn’t want to hear about the star tight end’s retirement.

That’s because whenever Kelce goes, Jones goes with him.

“He’s got four or five more years. What are you talking about?,” Jones told ESPN on Wednesday. “I can’t let TK go. It’s like we’re retiring, we have to retire together. I want at least six or four years. Then we’ll talk.”

The number of years until Jones retires as a football player varies, but the bottom line is that he doesn’t want to think about retirement right now.

Jones, 29, is much younger than Kelce, 34, but the Chiefs added two key players to the team this offseason.

Jones signed a five-year extension worth about $160 million, including $95 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history, and he also said he intends to serve out the full term of his new contract.

Chiefs’ Travis Kelce on thoughts of retirement: ‘Until the wheels come off’

Meanwhile, Kelce, a four-time All-Pro and future Hall of Famer, agreed to a two-year, $34.25 million contract extension and will receive $17 million guaranteed this season.

The Chiefs are focused on doing something no other team has managed to do — winning three straight Super Bowls — so Jones doesn’t want to hear the R-word at all.

“Once you start thinking about that, those thoughts get into your head,” Jones said. “You don’t want your mind to go all the way to the R word.”

When asked about retirement on Tuesday, Kelsey reassured reporters and the entire audience that he still has a lot to contribute to the sport he loves.

“I’m going to do it until the wheels come off,” he told Fox 4KC. “Hopefully, it won’t be anytime soon. I understand I’m at the end of the road, not the beginning. I’ve got to make sure I’m ready after football is over.”

“You can’t really put a time frame on it.”

Kelsey added that she “loves coming to work every day” and “still feels like a kid again when I walk into this building.”

Kelce has shown no signs of slowing down, hauling in 93 catches for 984 yards and five touchdowns in the regular season — a down year by his standards — but he came out big in the postseason, recording 32 catches for 355 yards and three touchdowns in the Chiefs’ four playoff games, including nine receptions in the Super Bowl overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Jones returned to the Chiefs at the start of the season (he had a contract dispute with Kansas City that the team resolved) and recorded 10.5 total sacks, his second consecutive season with double figures in that department, and 30 total tackles.

Both players have been crucial to head coach Andy Reid on game days and he plans to keep them around for as long as they remain with the team.
