A Chihuahua is hailed as a hero after guiding rescuers to a man who fell on a glacier in southern Switzerland. According to rescuers, “the dog’s actions helped the team pinpoint the accident’s location.”
This long-haired Chihuahua has now earned the title of a “four-legged hero,” wandering across rocky terrain to lead emergency responders at the glacier site, as noted by Air Zermatt, a Swiss helicopter rescue service.
Air Zermatt reported that the man was exploring the glacier with his small dog when he suddenly fell through a snow bridge into a 26-foot crevasse.
The man’s loyal Chihuahua stayed at the edge while he became trapped in the ice, according to the company.
Fortunately, the man had a walkie-talkie and was able to contact emergency services, but pinpointing his exact location remained a challenge, the rescuers noted.
Finding the site of the fall was tough because the glacier’s surface was expansive, making the crevasses hard to identify, the helicopter rescue team explained. “It was the little Chihuahua that likely saved his life.”
One of the rescue experts made a subtle movement on the rocks, noted Air Zermatt.
“The dog’s actions enabled the crew to locate the accident,” the helicopter rescue service stated.
Airsalmatt added: “The little dog was completely still throughout the operation, closely watching the movements of the rescue team.”
Ultimately, the man was rescued from the crevasse, and both he and his Chihuahua were taken to VISP hospital.
The rescue team emphasized that the dog’s behavior played a significant role in the success of the mission, dubbing the Chihuahua a “four-legged hero who may have saved his owner’s life in a critical situation.”
“Just think, if that dog hadn’t been there,” said Bruno Culbermatten, a spokesperson for Air Zermatt. “I honestly don’t know what would have happened to him. I doubt he would have survived that fall.”
