Nassau County Children's Hospital has received New York State approval to launch Long Island's first pediatric heart transplant program.

New cardiovascular services at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, a major Northwell medical facility, are of particular importance to the community.

Health systems experts have found that 55% of New York children in need of a new mind are within Cohen's service area.

“This will save the lives of hundreds of Long Island children in the future,” Dr. Jake Kleinmahon, medical director of Cohen's pediatric heart failure and transplant programme.

“With our pediatric heart transplant program, the opening of children and families on Long Island, the surrounding communities no longer have to travel to the city to save lives.”

According to Northwell, the key steps will take place at a state-of-the-art, $110 million facility for children, which Cohen opened in 2022 with eight operating suites.

Kleinmahon's team consists of over 20 additional care providers who are well versed in heart transplants.

“We have gathered a team of pediatric heart transplant specialists from all over the country to provide the highest quality care to our community,” the doctor said.
