Chili’s Employee Claims Firing Over Pronoun Dispute
A former worker at a Chili’s restaurant in Louisiana has come into the spotlight after claiming she was dismissed for not using a non-binary coworker’s preferred pronouns. However, the restaurant asserts that the termination resulted from ongoing harassment that breached company policy.
Wesley Kirk Ford Jr. took to social media to state that he lost his job for referring to a coworker by their legal name. He expressed frustration, saying, “I just got fired from Chili’s in Denham Springs for calling a non-binary co-worker by her actual government name lol. Now I have to look for a new job.”
In response, Ms. Chiles, the coworker in question, contests Ford’s narrative. She claims he repeatedly harassed and threatened fellow employees, disregarding requests for him to stop.
A spokesperson for Chili’s elaborated that while they typically avoid commenting on personal matters, it’s essential to clarify the situation. “This individual was terminated due to repeated harassment of a fellow team member, which violated our company’s policies to the point that the team member was unable to continue his shift,” they stated. They emphasized that Ford was asked to cease his behavior, but he did not comply.
The spokesperson further stated, “Harassment, bullying, and disrespectful behavior are inconsistent with our values and will not be tolerated. We remain focused on supporting our team members and maintaining a respectful environment.”
In another twist, Ford mentioned needing to seek a lawyer specializing in First Amendment rights and civil rights. He added, “I’m feeling fired up right now, so I’ll post more about what happened once things calm down a bit. LOL.”
In a video, Ford explained his stance on the matter, implying he was no longer participating in behavior he disagreed with. He insisted on speaking his mind, declaring, “I put my foot down.”
Chili’s stands firm in its claim, arguing that Ford’s actions constituted harassment, aimed at provoking and intimidating others, thereby creating a hostile work atmosphere that impeded effective job performance.
