China Calls on the U.S. to Remove Tariffs Following Supreme Court Decision

China Urges U.S. to Lift Tariffs Following Supreme Court Ruling

On Monday, China’s Ministry of Commerce appealed to the United States to remove all tariffs, especially after the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated former President Donald Trump’s emergency tariffs.

A spokesperson from the Ministry emphasized that China has long opposed any form of unilateral tariff hikes, highlighting that trade wars lead to losses for everyone involved. They mentioned that protectionist measures are ultimately unhelpful, as reported by China’s state news outlet.

The spokesperson criticized the U.S. for its unilateral actions, stating that measures like reciprocal tariffs and duties on fentanyl breach both international trade norms and U.S. domestic laws, with no benefits for any parties involved.

They went on to express that past experiences have shown cooperation is beneficial for both China and the United States, while confrontation is damaging. Therefore, China is calling on the U.S. to lift the unilateral tariffs affecting its trading partners.

In a ruling marked by a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court concluded that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not grant the president the power to enforce tariffs, effectively overturning Trump’s policy.

In light of this decision, Trump signed a proclamation on Friday to impose a 10% tariff on all countries. By Saturday, he escalated global tariffs to 15%, asserting in a post on Truth Social that his administration will announce new tariffs compliant with legal standards in the near future.

Trump stated: “After much thought and following a thorough review of what I consider unjust and anti-American tariff decisions by the Supreme Court, I declare that I will impose a 10% increase in global tariffs, potentially reaching a legally permissible 15%.”

According to the Ministry of Commerce, they are carefully assessing the implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling and reiterating their long-standing opposition to unilateral tariff increases.

The Ministry also noted that the U.S. seems to be planning alternative strategies, such as trade investigations, to retain tariffs on trading partners, and they will closely watch these developments to defend their rightful interests.

Gao Lingyun, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, remarked that the U.S. tariff policy appears to be arbitrary. They criticized the Trump administration for treating tariffs as a political tool, suggesting that tariff policies should rely on rigorous assessments rather than political motivations.
