China Responds Negatively to Gaza Ceasefire Agreement

The Chinese Foreign Ministry responded to Thursday’s ceasefire agreement in Gaza with a notably indifferent tone, expressing skepticism that anything short of establishing a Palestinian state would lead to lasting peace.

“China hopes for a prompt and complete ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which would significantly alleviate the humanitarian crisis and help reduce regional tensions,” stated Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Thursday.

“China firmly believes in the principle that ‘Palestinians should govern Palestine’ and supports the implementation of a two-state solution,” he added.

“We are prepared to collaborate with the international community to pursue an early, fair, and sustainable resolution to the Palestinian issue, ultimately achieving a peaceful and stable Middle East,” Guo concluded, omitting further comments or praise regarding the newfound peace agreement that started on Friday.

During a follow-up interaction with reporters, Guo reiterated similar sentiments about Israel’s troop withdrawal from Gaza and the planned prisoner exchanges as outlined in President Trump’s ceasefire proposal.

He also addressed Israel’s establishment of “settlements” on territories claimed by Palestinians, advising that they ought to “cease any actions that might provoke tensions or escalate the situation.”

Despite having facilitated improved relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran in March 2023—marking China’s entry as a diplomatic player in the Middle East—its influence has since waned on various regional issues. Guo’s remarks encapsulate nearly the whole of China’s foreign policy approach since the onset of the Gaza conflict on October 7, 2023.

Other Asian nations expressed approval for the ceasefire and commended President Trump for his role in the agreement. “We wholeheartedly welcome the agreement, thanks to President Trump’s decisive leadership, which has led to the release of hostages and secured a ceasefire in Gaza,” remarked Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

“It’s crucial that we seize this opportunity to improve humanitarian conditions, achieve lasting peace, and finalize a two-state resolution. Japan will remain actively involved,” he continued.

The Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs also acknowledged the agreement, highlighting that “we greatly appreciate U.S. President Trump’s initiative and the mediation efforts made by neighboring nations like Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye.” They added, “We hope this latest agreement will serve as a pivotal moment toward restoring peace and stability in the Middle East.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned on Thursday that he conveyed his congratulations to President Trump regarding the success of the historic Gaza peace plan, reaffirming his support for the agreement.
