China showcased a significant military display during a parade on Wednesday, marking the 80th anniversary of World War II’s conclusion.

The event, led by Xi Jinping, was framed as a demonstration of China’s technological prowess, industrial strength, and political determination.
Xi’s administration emphasized that the parade symbolized the independence and resilience of the Chinese people, asserting that they “are not afraid of violence.” He asserted, “The rejuvenation of the Chinese cannot be hindered, and the noble aim of developing human civilization peacefully will prevail.”
Critics, notably from Taiwan, pointed out the parade’s enormous costs. Estimates suggest it could exceed $5 billion, roughly 5% of China’s military budget.
This lavish spending was evident in the variety of military equipment paraded through Beijing, which included cutting-edge air drones, hypersonic missiles, advanced jets, large helicopters, and new models of nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

Many of these military advancements were known to foreign intelligence but had never been publicly displayed before. For the first time, China showcased all three aspects of the “Nuclear Triad,” featuring missiles launchable from land, sea, and air.
Included in the display were missiles marketed as “carrier killers.” Additionally, a land drone resembling a robotic wolf was featured, capable of hunting in AI-coordinated packs equipped with anti-personnel weaponry. The People’s Liberation Army has already integrated these robotic wolves into military drills, indicating readiness for battlefield use.
Along with traditional infantry and armored units, the parade highlighted new cyber warfare and information support capabilities. A notable and unexpected element was the possible presentation of a laser weapon that remained shrouded in secrecy until the last moment.
This parade also served as a statement of China’s geopolitical influence. Noteworthy attendees included Xi’s fellow authoritarian leaders, such as Vladimir Putin of Russia and Kim Jong-un of North Korea.
Putin faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court related to his actions in Ukraine; yet, China publicly welcomed him. Kim’s presence was aimed at reinforcing ties with China and supporting Putin’s growing alliance with Russia.
Radio Free Europe described the event as an “unprecedented show of solidarity” among these three leaders. Xi was seen welcoming Putin and Kim, sharing laughter and camaraderie as they walked together.
This carefully orchestrated display significantly elevated Kim’s status. He shared a limousine ride with Xi and Putin, marking his first visit to China since 2019 and also showcasing his daughter, Ju-ae, hinting at her future role in leadership.
When Putin greeted Kim, he invited him to Russia. In response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Kim vowed to support Russia in every possible way, with North Korea already contributing troops and supplies.
The encounter was captured in a video that stirred some unease, potentially for both Xi and Putin, as they engaged in lighthearted conversation about extending their leadership years into the future—a topic which might be unsettling given organ donation practices in China.
Former President Donald Trump criticized the parade, accusing Putin and Kim of using the WWII remembrance as a means to “conspire against the United States,” while also challenging China’s revisionist perspectives on history.
He pointed out that Chinese communists largely marginalized the war while the Chinese Republic, which later transitioned to Taiwan, was engaged in fierce combat. This manipulation of history is one reason Japan advised its allies to skip the Beijing commemoration, which upset Taiwanese officials. Recently, the Chinese government condemned Taiwanese views on the sacrifices made during the war, labeling them “blasphemous.”
Trump noted Xi might highlight America’s significant support to China during the war for its liberation from hostile forces. “Many Americans lost their lives during China’s struggle for victory,” he remarked. “I hope their sacrifices are duly honored.”
Kremlin officials responded, rejecting claims of any conspiracies, with Putin humorously acknowledging Trump’s comments as a joke. He asserted that no negative discussions occurred about the current U.S. administration during their conversations at the parade.
