Chinese-Born Republican Candidate Cautions Against Allowing Students From China Entry

Concerns Over Chinese Students in the U.S.

Republican House candidate Lily Tan Williams from New Hampshire expressed concerns on Tuesday about the implications of increasing the number of Chinese students allowed to study in the United States.

During an appearance on Fox & Friends First, President Donald Trump announced plans to permit 600,000 Chinese students to pursue their studies in the U.S.

Williams commented, “People need to realize that there are different types of Chinese students. Many, like myself, wanted to come here in the 1980s and 1990s, seeking the freedom and opportunity this country offers. Now, after China joined the WTO, we see a different scenario. Wealthy students are coming here, but they often have specific objectives to fulfill.”

She continued to express her worries about the influence of the Chinese government, stating that under Xi Jinping’s National Security and Information Act, these students may be under pressure to act in ways that serve the government’s interests. “There might be serious repercussions if they don’t comply,” she said. “So, I think allowing more of them in right now isn’t wise, especially with so many others entering the country under Biden’s administration and concerns about their vetting.”

The U.S. had previously restricted Chinese students due to national security concerns, especially after the Trump administration halted the recognition of certain foreign students. An agreement reached in June allowed Chinese students to attend American universities, but with the understanding that they would be closely monitored.

Trump reiterated the importance of welcoming these students while maintaining a cautious approach, emphasizing the need for proper scrutiny. He remarked, “We’re going to allow 600,000 students. That’s crucial, but we need to maintain a good relationship with China.”
