Chris Murphy Criticizes Trump Abroad, Urges Worldwide Action

Democrat Senators Celebrate Win for Iran: 'What a Catastrophe'

Murphy Advocates for Global Progressive Unity in Barcelona

Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) recently traveled to Barcelona, Spain, urging progressive parties worldwide to unite. During an event, he highlighted a connection between President Donald Trump and various right-wing movements globally. Notably, Alex Soros participated in the rally, noting that the summit drew thousands from over 100 countries and organizations.

Murphy expressed his thoughts on social media, stating, “I am in Barcelona today to help unite progressive parties around the world in defense of democracy and in the fight against corruption. This is the first of its kind. We need it to defeat the forces of fascism.”

In his speech, Murphy remarked:

“My friends, this is a moment when progressives around the world must come together. Trump, Orban, Le Pen, the AfD, the remnants of Bolsonaro—these right-wing movements are learning from each other. They are copying each other’s democracy-destroying tactics, expecting us to divide and debate purity tests while dismantling our freedoms. But to beat them, we must also learn from each other. We need to understand how Prime Minister Sánchez and President Lula have built great progressive coalitions around the world. We must learn the lessons of Hungary together. Are we all committed to learning those lessons together?”

Murphy’s remarks came on the heels of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s recent electoral victories. The defeat of the opposition leader Péter Magyar gained attention from high-profile figures like former President Barack Obama and ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Orbán, known for his strict stance on immigration and pro-family policies, is facing criticism from both liberal opponents and the media, with some labeling him a dictator.

The event in Barcelona also featured Alex Soros, the son of billionaire activist George Soros and chairman of the Open Society Foundations. Soros hinted at his support for the summit, expressing honor in having so many remarkable leaders present in Barcelona.

Murphy has consistently been vocal in his criticism of Trump and his administration. In March 2025, he asserted on CNN that “The White House has become an arm of the Kremlin,” suggesting that Trump seeks alignment with authoritarian regimes. Earlier in January 2026, he accused Trump of wanting to target people based on race and origin, asserting that Trump’s foreign policy is fundamentally corrupt. Notably, he emphasized that the 2024 Democratic efforts fell short for “the people we care about most: the undocumented Americans in this country.”
