Chris Richards injury update: USMNT defender 'prepared' for World Cup

Richards Set for World Cup Opener

IRVINE, Calif. — Chris Richards announced he’s ready to play in Team USA’s World Cup opener on Friday, much to the team’s relief.

“I’m ready,” he said during practice on Wednesday. “It’s the World Cup, so I was going to be ready anyway. I feel good. Sure, maybe there’s some swelling, but it’s nothing major.”

“If there’s ever a moment to put myself on the line, it’s now. I know I can play Friday, but ultimately, that’s not my call.”

Richards’ fitness had been a key concern for Team USA leading into this tournament, but he clarified that he’s good to go for the match against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium.

His fitness had been uncertain since he sprained his ankle while playing for Crystal Palace in England on May 17. He missed both a victory over Senegal and a close loss to Germany in the warm-up matches but returned to full training on Monday.

He practiced again on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Honestly, it took a bit longer than I thought,” Richards admitted. “The initial prognosis had me on a daily check-in, but I figured it’d be a two- to three-week recovery. I think we’re on track.”

When asked if the training staff had set any limits on his playing time, Richards replied, “No, they haven’t mentioned anything about that.”

He expressed confidence, adding that if he’s given the nod to suit up on Friday, he believes it won’t jeopardize his availability for the second group match against Australia on June 19.

“If we get off to a good start on Friday, it won’t compromise our chances for the rest of the tournament,” he said.

Richards emphasized that, hosting the World Cup, Team USA aims to celebrate the event in line with the nation’s 250th anniversary on July 4. He suggested that starting strong and securing three points on Friday is crucial.

“If we kick off the World Cup with three points, it boosts our confidence and signals to the group that we can lead this group and potentially this tournament,” Richards noted. “I believe that achieving a solid start will set the tone for the entire World Cup.”
