Christian Eriksen faints during Denmark-Ukraine game, match called off

During an international friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday, Denmark’s Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field. This wasn’t the first time, as he had previously collapsed during play. When medical personnel rushed to help him near the midfield, he collapsed again.

Fortunately, the Danish Football Association later announced that, under the circumstances, Eriksen was conscious and in good condition. The match was subsequently halted due to this concerning incident involving the 34-year-old player.

At the time of his collapse, Denmark was ahead 2-1 in the 61st minute. Eriksen, renowned for his time with Tottenham and Manchester United in the English Premier League, now plays for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga’s second division.

This isn’t Eriksen’s first brush with danger on the field. In June 2021, during a European Championship match against Finland, he suffered a cardiac arrest in the first half, causing the game to be suspended. The match took place at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium, where Eriksen was found unresponsive on the grass. Medical staff provided CPR to revive him while teammates created a protective circle around him, visibly distressed.

After about 10 minutes of treatment, Eriksen was removed from the field on a stretcher, with an oxygen mask over his face. Social media was soon flooded with images of him regaining consciousness, hand on forehead, as he was taken to the hospital where his condition stabilized.

Subsequently, Eriksen had an implantable defibrillator fitted to manage his heart rhythms. Denmark’s team doctor, Morten Bosen, confirmed that Eriksen’s device was functioning properly.

In a statement, Bosen mentioned that Eriksen had briefly lost consciousness but quickly regained it, and they were in continuous contact with him. Eriksen, he noted, was recovering well and had even expressed appreciation for the support from teammates, reassuring them of his safety.
