A diplomatic tension involving a minor official from Israel’s Home Affairs Ministry was settled on Monday, thanks to what lawyer Calev Myers described as “fruitful cooperation” concerning a Christian organization’s visa application.
Myers noted that evangelical Christian organizations operating in Israel, which represent a significant number of Zionists worldwide, typically have access to a smooth and effective visa application process.
The situation gained attention last week when Israeli Ambassador Mike Huckabee wrote to Home Minister Moshe Abel, voicing his “great pain” over a suspension regarding visa grants that have been consistently provided to Christian organizations for years.
In his letter, Huckabee expressed concern that in early 2025, the Ministry’s visa department began disregarding the Ministry of Religion’s advice, opting instead to investigate each Christian organization individually. They aimed to assess whether these groups qualified as a “religious system” eligible for visas.
He pointed to specific groups like the Israeli Baptist Treaty and the Christian Missionary Alliance, indicating that their members faced challenges in renewing A3 clergy visas and were compelled to complete extensive surveys about their religious views. Huckabee mentioned that their applications remained “under investigation.”
He reiterated the importance of international Christian support for Israel, especially during times of global pressure.
Reports indicate the visa complications originated from a low-level clerk at the Home Affairs Ministry, leading to an increasingly challenging visa process for clergy and volunteers, which has been mired in obstacles for years. Additionally, some within the ministry are said to be less than sympathetic to Christian relations.
Former Israeli Ambassador to the US, Michael Oren, stated that he is assisting Christian organizations in obtaining visas for their crucial work in Israel, emphasizing that these groups should not have to struggle.
Oren shared that Christian support for Israel is vital, particularly during crises, asserting that these individuals contribute significantly to Israeli society.
The Home Affairs Ministry, which oversees population and immigration matters, is currently headed by the ultra-Orthodox Chass Party, part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition. It has been suggested that challenges in this ministry stem from a lack of stable leadership, which leaves lower officials in a position to make unilateral decisions.
In response to the situation, Moshe Abel communicated directly with Huckabee, promising to review visa applications carefully and to ensure a smoother process moving forward.
When contacted for a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem declined to comment.
As of late 2024, the Israeli Christian community is estimated to comprise roughly 1.8% of the nation’s population, signaling a growth trend. David Parsons, from the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem, expressed gratitude for the US ambassador’s intervention, while also lamenting that such efforts were necessary to remedy internal issues.
Meanwhile, former US Ambassador David Friedman characterized the situation as a misunderstanding, expressing confidence that Christian groups would ultimately receive the support they need.
