A Vermont Christian high school is suing state officials, alleging it was “denied participation” in academic competitions as well as competitive sporting events. The school had previously been penalized for refusing to allow its women’s basketball team to play against a team that included a transgender individual.
The Mid-Vermont Christian School Eagles intentionally forfeited a 2023 playoff game against the Long Trail Mountain Lions after learning that one player on the Long Trail team was male.
The Vermont Principals Association then banned MVCS from “future VPA-sanctioned activities and tournaments.” This meant that the school could not participate in any athletics or intramural events under the jurisdiction of her VPA.
Mid-Vermont State said in the school’s lawsuit that the students “suffered irreparable harm by being denied participation” and “lost not only their academics but also the opportunity to play competitive sports.”

The Vermont Principals Association previously said it believes “supporting transgender student-athletes” is “a core part of building inclusive communities for each student to grow and thrive.”
“VPA is committed to providing all students with the opportunity to participate in VPA activities in a manner consistent with their gender identity,” the state organization also declared.
MVCS Principal Vicki Fogg defended MVCS student-athletes, saying it was a matter of safety and equity.
