Christian Leaders Seek Peace Amid Growing Tensions in Los Angeles Over Immigration Raids

Christian Leaders Call for Prayer Amid Los Angeles Unrest

In California, Christian leaders are urging prayer and peace as tension rises in Los Angeles following recent violent demonstrations related to immigration enforcement. Protests against ICE escalated over the weekend, leading to clashes where cars—some self-driving—were set on fire, and projectiles were hurled at highways and law enforcement. In response, police utilized tear gas and rubber bullets, resulting in numerous arrests.

The situation intensified after President Trump ordered nearly 2,000 California State Guard troops to federal duty, despite pushback from Governor Gavin Newsom—marking a rare instance where the governor’s opposition was disregarded since the 1960s.

To restore calm, troops have been sent to Los Angeles, as the White House emphasizes the need to protect federal buildings. Trump commented on the unrest, stating, “We are not going to let our country go… It’s torn.”

Newsom has accused the President of “manufacturing a crisis,” asserting that the chaos did not exist prior to federal involvement and labeling it an infringement on national sovereignty.

Amidst these tensions, religious leaders are praying for tranquility. Archbishop of Los Angeles, Jose H. Gomez, expressed his “troubled” feelings over the enforcement actions, asking for restraint from all parties involved.

“We all agree that we don’t want undocumented immigrants who are known in our community to be terrorists or violent criminals,” Gomez noted. “However, the government doesn’t need to act in ways that instill fear among hardworking immigrants and their families. I urge Congress to take a serious look at our broken immigration system that drives many to cross borders illegally.”

Members of the Chapel of Change, a congregation located in Paramount, have taken to social media, asking for peace and unity in their city. One member posted, “I pray for the city of Paramount today.”

The National Faith Advisory Committee, initiated by the White House earlier this year, also called for prayer and meditation in light of the unfolding events, coinciding with a national baptism initiative.

“Pray for California! The Los Angeles riots spark hatred, while another movement in Newport Beach is fueled by the Holy Spirit!” the advisory committee wrote, highlighting the contrast between darkness and light and asserting that the gospel remains the country’s only hope.
