As the NFL Championship game approaches on Sunday, let's focus on the weapons on offense other than quarterback.
The final four teams have such great offensive talent that it would be impossible to name them all, but here is a list of the top 10 offensive weapons other than quarterback. kansas city chiefs, san francisco 49ers, baltimore ravens and detroit lions.
1. Christian McCaffrey:
The 49ers' Christian McCaffery was perhaps the most dynamic player in the NFL and a legitimate MVP candidate. McCaffrey is the biggest headache for defensive coordinators in the playoffs because of his huge impact on the game. The guy who scored the winning touchdown last week against the Green Bay Packers will be a big problem for the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
2. Amon-Ra St. Brown:
The playoffs gave casual fans who may not have watched much of the Lions a chance to see talented young receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. The 24-year-old had 119 catches, 1,515 touchdowns, and 10 touchdowns, the second-most receiving totals in the regular season. The third-year player continues to put up big numbers in the playoffs, with 15 catches for 187 yards and one touchdown in two games. Expect to see more action this week against the 49ers.
3. Travis Kelsey:
Although Travis Kelce's production has declined some, he is still a mainstay and a big threat to the Baltimore Ravens defense. Kelce helped Kansas City come from behind to beat Buffalo in the divisional round on Sunday, ending a seven-game touchdown drought. He and Patrick Mahomes have a special connection in the playoffs, as they hold the combined record for postseason touchdowns for a quarterback and receiver with 16 in just six seasons. Kelce is also six catches away from tying Jerry Rice's all-time postseason receiving record. Kelce will be Mahomes' top option on Sunday, whether girlfriend Taylor Swift is in attendance or not.
4. Sam Laporta
This Detroit Lions rookie was incredible. Tight ends usually take time to make an impact, but the 34th overall pick out of Iowa State made an immediate impact. Sam LaPorta returned from injury in Week 18 and had nine catches for 65 yards in the divisional round against Tampa Bay. LaPorta had 86 catches, 889 yards, and 10 touchdowns during the 2023 regular season. Laporta, a supreme route runner, will be in trouble for a long time.
5. Brandon Aiyuk:
brandon Aiyuk is an underrated playmaker. Although he had a great season, with 75 catches for 1,342 yards (an impressive 17.9 catches per catch average) and seven scores this season, he was one of the 49ers' richest talents on offense. It might still be buried inside. Aiyuk may have more of a chance to prevent big plays on Sunday, as his partner Deebo Samuel is dealing with a shoulder injury.
6. Jahmil Gibbs:
The Lions' Jahmil Gibbs may be considered the best running back in the league for years to come. The No. 12 overall draft pick continued to perform well in the second half of the 2023 season, gaining 74 yards on nine carries against Tampa Bay in the divisional round. The Lions still use Gibbs in a committee with David Montgomery, but Gibbs is a game-breaker.
7. Zai Flowers:
Hey, I'm new again! The first-round pick out of Boston College had 77 catches for 858 yards in the regular season. He becomes the Ravens' biggest weapon in 2023, especially with tight end Mark Andrews injured. Expect Lamar Jackson to go to Flowers often and face a tough Chiefs secondary.
8. George Kittle:
George Kittle is a big-time player. The 49ers' star tight end lives for the spotlight. He had four catches for 81 yards and a touchdown against Green Bay. packers Expect him to be primed to outperform Laporta in the championship game in the divisional round.
9. Lasi Rice:
Chiefs wide receiver Laci Rice, a second-round draft pick out of SMU who has become Mahomes' most reliable wide receiver, is the fourth rookie on this list. He had 79 catches for 938 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023 and had 12 catches for 177 yards and one touchdown in the Chiefs' two playoff games. A big game on Sunday could give the Chiefs a second straight road upset win.
10. Isaiah Pacheco:
It all ends with the Chiefs' running backs. It's no coincidence that with Isaiah Pacheco back healthy, his presence takes the pressure off Mahomes and eases Kansas City's offensive woes. That was evidenced by Pacheco's 15 carries for 97 yards and a score in Buffalo's game against the Bills in the divisional round. The Chiefs will be keeping an eye on Pacheco in Sunday's game between Baltimore and the Ravens.
