Christian McCaffrey shares strange 'cracker' praise he received in Australia

Christian McCaffrey’s Australian Experience

This week, 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey had a light-hearted moment that highlighted cultural differences in language while preparing for their game in Melbourne. It involved a compliment that, surprisingly, had a very different connotation back home in the United States.

While getting a haircut, McCaffrey shared that one of the barbers looked at him and said, “Looks cracker.” He found it amusing, recalling how he responded, “Sorry, what did you say?” Not entirely sure of what it meant at first, he figured out that, in Australia, it’s a positive term. “I hear that every Sunday,” he joked, enjoying the exchange. It’s this slang that he finds quite entertaining.

The term “cracker,” as McCaffrey discovered, is indeed a compliment in Australian slang, indicating something great or exceptional. A guide from Charles Stuart University illustrates this with the phrase, “What a cracker of a day.”

However, in American English, the word often carries an entirely different and derogatory meaning. With that context, it made sense why McCaffrey was taken aback when he first heard it.

This amusing story is likely one that McCaffrey will remember from his visit to Australia, especially after the 49ers’ victory over the Rams, marking the NFL’s first game on Australian soil.

As for McCaffrey’s performance during the game, he finished with a modest 88 total yards on 15 touches. Some speculated about how he would perform considering his recent injury issues, particularly after a limited preseason due to tightness in his body. Interestingly, backup Kaelon Black had more carries—14 to McCaffrey’s 10—but both players had fairly similar yardage.

McCaffrey caught five passes for 20 yards, but 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan noted that he experienced some cramping during the game. Shanahan expressed satisfaction with how both McCaffrey and Black ran, emphasizing that balancing their play was a key goal.

Looking ahead, McCaffrey and the 49ers will have an extended break—three extra days—to recover and acclimatize before their home opener against the Dolphins on September 20. Reflecting on the game, McCaffrey felt positive about the team’s performance, stating, “Did a great job managing the week and an exciting win.”
