Christian McCaffrey promised to return to the field and come back “better” from an injury-plagued 2024 in an emotional post on social media.
The 49ers superstar made the statement in a long caption on his Instagram feed after the team placed him on injured reserve earlier this week, marking his second time on IR this year.
McCaffrey suffered a PCL sprain during the 49ers' loss to the Bills on Sunday Night Football in snow-covered Buffalo, and his season is now likely over.
“For me, football is the best game on earth. I love that I can know exactly who I am without having to say anything.” the running back wrote.. “It can uplift you or it can bring you down, but it can happen quickly. It's humbling in a good way. You can do everything right and still fail. That's life. That's football. It's a constant test of will, and those who just keep going tend to reap the benefits of that perseverance.
“This year wasn't my year, but when it rains, it pours. You can feel sorry for yourself and listen to the birds, or you can hold back. I appreciate the support of everyone in my corner and I promise to work smarter and harder than ever to come back from this situation better. I love my teammates. , 9ers I love you and I love football. God don't miss it. Please move on.”
If McCaffrey's season is indeed over, 2024 would be a loss for the two-time All-Pro, who suffered an injury (calf strain) during training camp and did not make his season debut until Week 10. It will be recorded as a season.
After winning AP Offensive Player of the Year in 2023, McCaffrey's longest run was 19 yards and he only gained 202 rushing yards.
However, there is hope that McCaffrey could return to the field if the 49ers make it to the postseason.
“Yes, I believe so.” Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters. The idea came to me on Wednesday.

McCaffrey is expected to be out for at least six weeks, with five weeks remaining in the regular season.
